Rajnagar

Rajnagar, a historic village in the Madhubani district of Bihar, India, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and architectural marvels. Located near the Kamla River, Rajnagar was once the administrative capital of the Darbhanga Raj and is home to the famed Navlakha Palace complex.

Navlakha Palace Complex

The Navlakha Palace, also known as Rajnagar Palace, was constructed in the 17th century by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga. This architectural masterpiece showcases the grandeur of Mithila art and design. The palace complex encompasses several temples, forts, and structures spread over a vast area. Notably, the complex includes 11 temples dedicated to various deities, reflecting the deep-rooted religious sentiments of the region.

One of the most remarkable structures within the complex is the Kali Temple, renowned for its intricate ivory and white marble construction, reminiscent of the Taj Mahal. The portico of the temple is adorned with arches supported by four cement elephants, showcasing the unique architectural style of the era. The palace complex also houses the oldest surviving Mithila painting, located in the Gasauni Ghar (the room where the family deity is kept), created in 1919 during the wedding of the Maharaja's daughter.

Impact of the 1934 Earthquake

In 1934, a devastating earthquake struck the region, causing significant damage to the Navlakha Palace complex. The main palace, temples, and other structures were ruined almost beyond repair. The earthquake rendered the main palace through the Durga hall and the roof over the inner shrines into a mass of ruins, and the marble image of the deity broke into pieces. The Shiva temple, built on the South Indian model, was beyond repair.

Current State and Tourism

Today, the remnants of the Navlakha Palace stand as a testament to the grandeur of the past. Despite the ruins, the site attracts tourists, historians, and archaeologists who are fascinated by its historical significance and architectural brilliance. The palace complex, often referred to as the "City of Ruins," offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Mithila region.
